Pendant qu'Esdras, pleurant et prosterné devant la maison de Dieu, faisait cette prière et cette confession, il s'était rassemblé auprès de lui une foule très nombreuse de gens d'Israël, hommes, femmes et enfants, et le peuple répandait d'abondantes larmes.
Cela fait, les chefs se sont approchés de moi en disant : « Le peuple d'Israël, les prêtres et les Lévites ne se sont pas séparés des populations installées dans la région ; ils imitent leurs pratiques abominables, oui, celles des Cananéens, des Hittites, des Phéréziens, des Jébusiens, des Ammonites, des Moabites, des Egyptiens et des Amoréens.

1 et 2 Esdras apprend qu'un certain nombre d'Israélites ont épousé des femmes étrangères.

Et quand ces choses furent terminées. Esdras était arrivé à Jérusalem le premier jour du cinquième mois (7.9) ; il se peut que la remise des ordres royaux aux satrapes et aux gouverneurs ait donné lieu à des pourparlers assez longs (8.36) ; en sorte que nous ne devons pas être surpris que l'assemblée convoquée à propos des femmes étrangères et qui semble avoir suivi de près la dénonciation que rapporte notre verset n'ait eu lieu que le vingtième jour du neuvième mois (10.9).

Les chefs : non pas tous ; ceux qui étaient coupables (verset 2) ne se sont sans doute pas dénoncés. Nous dirions des chefs. Zorobabel ne semble pas avoir eu de successeur ; à l'arrivée d'Esdras la colonie n'avait pas à sa tête un gouverneur, mais un certain nombre de notables.

Ils imitent les abominations des Cananéens... Les mots ils imitent, ne sont pas dans le texte. La traduction littérale serait : selon leurs abominations, celles des Cananéens. des Héthiens, etc... c'est-à-dire : ils ne se sont pas séparés des peuples des pays étrangers comme ils auraient dû le faire d'après les abominations qui se trouvent du plus au moins chez chacun d'eux. Ces abominations sont l'idolâtrie avec les divers rites impurs qui l'accompagnent. Les mariages mixtes auraient dû être absolument évités en tant que favorisant l'introduction des faux dieux en Israël et enlevant à la race elle-même toute sainteté (verset 2 ; Exode 19.5).

Cananéens : dans l'acception restreinte de ce mot, comme dans Exode 13.5 ; Deutéronome 7.4 ; habitants. non pas de tout le pays de Canaan, mais de la plaine maritime, de la plaine du Jourdain et de celle de Jizréel.

Héthiens : Genèse 10.15, note.

Phéréziens : Genèse 13.7.

Jébusiens : Genèse 10.16.

Ammonites,... Moabites,... Egyptiens. La loi (Exode 34.16 et Deutéronome 7.3) ne condamnait, il est vrai, que les mariages avec les Cananéennes ; mais il est naturel que cette prohibition ait été étendue aux autres populations païennes avec lesquelles Israël était en contact et qui s'étaient sans doute multipliées dans le pays pendant l'exil.

Les excès de corruptions finissent par masquer toute perspective de retour vers une bonne conduite.

Une partie du peuple juif désobéit à l'ordre divin impératif, interdisant tout mariage avec les païens, \\#De 7:1-26\\. Notre manque de confiance parfaite en Dieu, est à la base de toutes les déviations vers lesquelles nous nous laissons dériver. Les Juifs s'exposèrent, eux et leurs enfants, au péril de l'idolâtrie, ce fléau qui fut à l'origine de la ruine du temple et de leur nation.

Les mauvais conseillers, ceux qui suivent les principes de ce monde, ne font que minimiser les inconvénients de la désobéissance à Dieu, et tentent toujours de rejeter les exhortations à s'éloigner du mal ; mais ceux qui connaissent bien la Parole de Dieu, traiteront le sujet de l'obéissance différemment ! Ils sont tout à fait aptes à pressentir les dangers, quand ils se risquent à emprunter de mauvaises voies.

Les mauvaises excuses, même celles qui paraissent plausibles aux yeux de tous, ne laissent jamais indifférents les croyants véritables. Tous ceux qui disent être enfants de Dieu, devraient encourager ceux qui tentent de lutter contre le vice et l'impiété !
