Exode 19.16

Et il arriva, le troisième jour, quand le matin fut venu, qu'il y eut des tonnerres et des éclairs, et une épaisse nuée sur la montagne, et un son de trompette très-fort ; et tout le peuple qui était dans le camp trembla.

Jamais pareil sermon, tel que celui donné par Dieu dans le désert, ne fut prêché au peuple. On peut supposer que ce dernier était vraiment effrayé, et que cette frayeur entravait toute approche de curiosité ; le cœur le plus endurci d'un pécheur n'offre guère de poids face aux avertissements et aux jugements divins.

Quand, dans le cheminement de notre vie, nous nous approchons de Dieu, nous ne devons pas oublier, d'une part, Sa Sainteté et Sa grandeur, mais aussi notre méchanceté et notre position, pollués que nous sommes par le péché. Par nature, nous ne pouvons pas nous dresser devant la grandeur des jugements de l'Éternel, ni devant Sa Loi, pleine de droiture.

Le pécheur convaincu pose cette question : « Que dois-je faire pour être sauvé » ? Une voix lui répond alors : « Crois au Seigneur Jésus et tu seras sauvé ». Le Saint-Esprit, qui a créé la loi pour nous convaincre de notre péché, nous présente maintenant le salut en Jésus-Christ. Dans l'évangile, nous lisons que Christ nous a racheté de la malédiction annoncée par la loi, Il a été fait malédiction pour nous. Nous avons la rédemption par Son sang et nos péchés sont ainsi pardonnés. En Lui, nous sommes justifiés de tout, même de ce dont nous étions accusés par la loi de Moïse. Mais les ordonnances divines doivent être considérées comme une règle de vie. Le Fils de Dieu est descendu des cieux, il a souffert de la pauvreté, de la honte, de l'agonie et de la mort, non seulement pour nous racheter de la malédiction, mais aussi afin que nous gardions tous Ses commandements.

      Exode 9

      23 Moses stretched out his rod toward the heavens, and Yahweh sent thunder, hail, and lightning flashed down to the earth. Yahweh rained hail on the land of Egypt.
      28 Pray to Yahweh; for there has been enough of mighty thunderings and hail. I will let you go, and you shall stay no longer."
      29 Moses said to him, "As soon as I have gone out of the city, I will spread abroad my hands to Yahweh. The thunders shall cease, neither shall there be any more hail; that you may know that the earth is Yahweh's.

      Exode 19

      9 Yahweh said to Moses, "Behold, I come to you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and may also believe you forever." Moses told the words of the people to Yahweh.
      16 It happened on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain, and the sound of an exceedingly loud trumpet; and all the people who were in the camp trembled.

      Exode 20

      18 All the people perceived the thunderings, the lightnings, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking. When the people saw it, they trembled, and stayed at a distance.
