L'étranger en Israël, quoique protégé par la loi (Exode 22.21 ; Deutéronome 24.17), n'avait pourtant pas entièrement les mêmes droits que l'Israélite, qui pouvait ainsi profiter de sa supériorité sociale pour l'opprimer.
