Ils sont arrivés chez les nations où ils se rendaient et ils ont profané mon saint nom, en sorte qu’on disait d’eux : C’est le peuple de l’Éternel, c’est de son pays qu’ils sont sortis.

Ils ont déshonoré mon nom : non par les péchés qu'ils ont commis chez les païens, mais, comme le prouve la suite, par le fait même de la captivité. Car, en voyant ce peuple conduit en exil, les païens ne se disaient pas : c'est son Dieu qui le châtie ; ils se figuraient que ce Dieu était impuissant à le protéger contre leurs ennemis. Voir Esaïe 48.9-11.
