World English Bible But far be it from me to boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

Ces paroles forment le plus vif contraste avec celles de versets 12,13

Il faut prendre ce mot : la croix de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ, dans sa pleine et profonde signification : "Je ne me glorifie qu'en la libre grâce de Dieu, que nous a acquise la mort expiatoire de Jésus-Christ sur la croix, par laquelle il a vaincu le monde, par laquelle seule nous le vaincrons aussi, si nous lui devenons semblables dans le renoncement et le crucifiement du vieil homme."

L'apôtre exprime en ces mots, à la fois sa réprobation de tout moyen de salut que l'on voudrait chercher dans la nature déchue de l'homme (dans la chair), et la joie qu'il trouve dans l'opprobre de la croix que ses adversaires redoutaient par-dessus tout.

Or, la croix est en même temps le moyen de notre réconciliation avec Dieu et un instrument d'humiliation, de souffrance et de mort pour notre vieil homme. C'est par elle que nous sommes crucifiés au monde et que le monde nous est crucifié.

Le monde, c'est tout ce qui est opposé à la "nouvelle créature," (verset 15) au règne spirituel de Jésus-Christ en nous et autour de nous ; c'est l'objet unique des pensées, des désirs, des affections, des espérances, des efforts de l'homme irrégénéré.

L'apôtre déclare que ce monde-là, dans lequel pourtant il jouissait autrefois d'une si grande considération, (Galates 1.14 ; Philippiens 3.4-6) est mort pour lui, mort d'une mort honteuse, crucifié, c'est-à-dire objet de son mépris. (Philippiens 3.7,8)

Mais le monde le lui rend bien, il regarde l'apôtre et tous ceux qui lui ressemblent, avec le mépris qu'on a pour des crucifiés. Et loin de s'en affliger ou d'en avoir honte, Paul s'en glorifie et y trouve sa joie.
