Allons ! Ce mot répond aux deux allons ! prononcés par les hommes (versets 3 et 4) : entreprise contre entreprise.

Descendons. Pour ce pluriel, voir 1.26, note. L'Eternel a manifesté d'une manière sensible, dont nous ignorons le mode, sa présence, afin que la vraie cause de la catastrophe fût comprise. D'après une tradition rapportée par Bérose et par Josèphe, un vent furieux aurait renversé la tour.

Confondons là leur langage. La différence de langage repose sur une manière différente de penser, de raisonner et de concevoir les choses. C'est donc dans ce domaine intérieur de la pensée et de la conscience qu'a dû se produire l'acte divin d'où est résultée la formation des langues diverses.

Comment cela s'est-il passé ? C'est ce qu'on ne saurait expliquer, pas plus qu'on ne peut expliquer le phénomène inverse qui s'est produit à la Pentecôte, (Actes 2), et qui est le gage certain qu'un jour les conséquences de la catastrophe de Babel disparaîtront, comme toutes les autres conséquences du péché. Dans tous les cas, il n'y a pas à douter de la réalité du fait, puisque l'unité primitive de la race humaine, par conséquent aussi de sa langue, nous paraît positivement établie.

On peut penser, il est vrai, que la multiplicité des langues ne s'est produite que graduellement et a été le résultat plutôt que la cause de la dispersion des hommes. Le texte scripturaire ne dit pas non plus que le résultat se soit produit instantanément. Il attribue seulement à une action divine et momentanée la multiplicité des langues et la dispersion des peuples. Ces deux effets se sont sans doute produits graduellement et en réagissant constamment l'un sur l'autre.
