Comme aujourd'hui encore en Orient, le roi avait un harem où l'on faisait entrer les plus belles femmes du royaume.

Fut prise et emmenée dans la maison : littéralement, pour la maison, pour en faire partie.

Pharaon. Ce mot, en langue égyptienne per-aa ou pher-ao, signifie grande maison. Ce titre, qui est donné par les auteurs bibliques à tous les rois d 'Egypte, rappelle le nom de sublime porte donné à la cour du sultan.

On admet généralement que le Pharaon dont il est question ici devait appartenir à la dynastie des Hyksos. On appelle ainsi des tribus de race sémitique qui envahirent la Basse-Egypte et y régnèrent longtemps. Il est peu probable, en effet, qu'un Egyptien pur sang eût pris une étrangère pour femme ; à peine en aurait-il fait sa concubine. D'autres savants pensent cependant que ce séjour d'Abraham en Egypte eut lieu sous un roi de la 12 ième dynastie, qui est antérieure aux Hyksos. Ils allèguent des inscriptions et des peintures retrouvées dans un tombeau égyptien, d'après lesquelles les rois de cette dynastie auraient été en relation avec des tribus sémitiques. Mais ces relations sont loin d'aller jusqu'à l'union des deux races par le mariage.
