Qui riait. Le même mot signifie plaisanter (19.14) ; se divertir (Exode 32.6) ; jouer (Zacharie 8.5). Les LXX et la Vulgate le traduisent ici aussi par jouer. D'après ce sens, Ismaël aurait joué familièrement avec le petit Isaac, et ce serait cette familiarité qui aurait offensé Sara, comme compromettant la dignité du seul héritier légitime d'Abraham.

D'autres donnent à ce rire un sens plus grave ; ils y voient une moquerie. Fier de sa supériorité en âge et en force, Ismaël aurait tourné en ridicule ce petit enfant et, les promesses qui lui étaient faites. C'est dans ce sens que saint Paul a compris cette expression (Galates 4.29). Quoi qu'il en soit, Sara exprime à cette occasion sa ferme volonté que la situation de son fils comme héritier, soit mise hors de toute atteinte (verset 10).

Ne négligeons pas la manière par laquelle l'affaire de cette famille nous enseigne à user de nos privilèges ou des avantages que nous apportent nos actions. Recherchons, par la foi en la Sûreté divine, les bénédictions offertes par la nouvelle alliance. Ismaël a été persécuté ; il a méprisé l'Alliance et les promesses divines et a usé de malice vis-à-vis d'Isaac.

Dieu observe les paroles, les actes et les jeux des enfants ; Il sait entendre leurs mauvaises paroles et ce, malgré l'enseignement correct de leurs parents. Se moquer est un grand péché qui provoque Dieu. Les enfants de la promesse doivent s'attendre à subir la moquerie. Abraham était attristé par la mauvaise conduite d'Ismaël et par la sévère punition demandée par Sara. Dieu, cependant, lui a montré qu'Isaac serait le père de la Semence promise ; le fait d'éloigner Ismaël ne pouvait que l'empêcher d'usurper éventuellement les droits d'Isaac. La descendance promise à Abraham se devait d'être autonome, sans compromis avec ceux qui étaient étrangers à la Promesse. Sara ne soupçonnait pas la portée de sa décision ; mais Dieu a dirigé toutes choses.
