31-39 Les rois d'Edom

Voici les rois. On pourrait supposer que nous passons ici à une nouvelle période de l'histoire d'Edom et que la monarchie a succédé dans ce pays à l'oligarchie, qui semble être la forme de gouvernement supposée dans les versets 20 à 30. Mais il est possible aussi, et c'est le plus probable, que les chefs mentionnés plus haut aient été les grands du pays, qui élisaient le roi dans leur sein. Le fait qu'aucun des rois indiqués ici n'est fils de son prédécesseur prouve qu'en effet la monarchie édomite était élective. Comparez Esaïe 34.12. C'est comme si l'on indiquait les noms des empereurs d'Allemagne, après avoir indiqué ceux des princes électeurs qui les désignaient.

Avant qu'un roi régnât sur les enfants d'Israël. Il est évident que cette remarque sur les rois édomites doit avoir été rédigée après l'établissement de la royauté israélite, d'où l'on ne peut pourtant rien inférer de certain sur l'époque de la composition de la Genèse, puisque ce peut être ici un fragment postérieurement inséré dans le récit.

Les noms de ces huit rois ne se trouvent nulle part ailleurs.
