Déchira ses vêtements. Symbole du déchirement du cœur. Cet acte devint plus tard un signe de convention dans les deuils, et les Juifs se bornèrent à déchirer leur robe sur la poitrine, sur une longueur d'environ dix centimètres.

Mit un sac sur ses reins. Un vêtement fait du même tissu rude que les sacs, c'est-à-dire de poil de chèvre ou de chameau. C'était le vêtement de deuil ordinaire.
