Selon plusieurs, Jacob, après avoir fait entrevoir les luttes redoutables où seront engagés ses descendants, exprimerait ici l'espoir que Dieu les secourra comme il l'a secouru lui-même. Ce sens est bien recherché. Ce verset doit plutôt être rapporté à Jacob lui-même, qui, sentant ses forces faiblir, exprime le besoin de repos et l'aspiration à la pleine délivrance.
