World English Bible You shall take seven pairs of every clean animal with you, the male and his female. Of the animals that are not clean, take two, the male and his female.

Il résulte de l'observation précédente que l'ordre donné ici n'est pas le même que celui énoncé 6.19-21. Celui qui nous occupe ici est donné sept jours avant le déluge, au moment où Noé doit faire entrer les animaux dans l'arche, tandis que l'autre faisait partie des indications générales données à Noé au moment où il devait commencer à construire l'arche, c'est-à-dire bien longtemps avant ce moment-ci.

Sept paires.... littéralement : sept, sept, le mâle et sa femelle. Plusieurs entendent : à chaque fois au nombre de sept : trois mâles et trois femelles, plus un mâle (sans doute). Ce sens est peu naturel, et les mots mâle et femelle font plutôt penser qu'il s'agit de sept paires.

Dans le récit élohiste il n'est question que d'une seule paire de chaque espèce ( 6.19 ). Mais, comme nous l'avons vu, le premier ordre avait été donné longtemps à l'avance ; c'était une instruction générale ; l'ordre actuel, donné au moment de la catastrophe, peut fort bien y ajouter un détail nouveau.

Le but de cet ordre spécial relatif aux animaux purs était de fournir à Noé des victimes pour le sacrifice qu'il offrirait après sa sortie de l'arche et d'assurer la reproduction rapide des animaux purs sur la terre nouvelle.

La distinction entre animaux purs et impurs doit être très ancienne ; on la retrouve chez la plupart des peuples dès la plus haute antiquité. En Israël, elle exista sans doute comme coutume avant d'être réglementée par la loi. Voir sur cette question à Lévitique 11.1-31
