Même dans sa manifestation première et la plus générale, la foi, en tant qu'elle nous persuade que le monde a été créé par la parole de Dieu, est une vue de l'invisible. En observant le monde sensible, l'homme ne discerne qu'une chaîne non interrompue de causes et d'effets, et rien ne lui prouve que cette chaîne ait jamais eu un commencement.

Par la foi, se fondant sur une révélation positive de Dieu, il considère, comprend, reconnaît que toutes les choses visibles ont eu, en leur temps, une cause invisible, que l'univers (grec les siècles, les périodes que l'univers doit parcourir et tout ce qui les remplit) a été fait, formé, construit par une ou par la parole créatrice de Dieu.

L'auteur fait allusion à Genèse 1.1-4. (Psaumes 33.6. Comparer Jean 1.1-3)

Et il ne faut pas à la foi un petit effort pour admettre ce miracle des miracles, cet acte de la toute-puissance par lequel l'univers fut tiré du néant, construit par la parole de Dieu, afin que, comme l'auteur ajoute, marquant l'intention divine, ce qui se voit n'eût point été fait de choses qui parussent, c'est-à-dire eût une cause invisible, immatérielle, le Dieu éternel luimême, et fût appelé à l'existence par sa seule parole créatrice.
