La lapidation était la peine de mort en usage chez les Juifs, Zacharie, fils de Jehojada, mourut de ce supplice (2Chroniques 24.21, comparez Matthieu 23.35) ainsi que le prophète Jérémie, d'après là tradition.

- Une tradition aussi, généralement reçue dans les premiers siècles de l'Eglise rapporte que le prophète Esaïe fut scié en deux sous Manassé. (Comparer 2Rois 21.16)

- Plusieurs prophètes (grec) moururent de mort par l'épée au temps d'Elie. (1Rois 19.10)

- Souvent les prophètes, pour fuir les persécutions, ou pour mieux faire sentir au peuple ses péchés, se retiraient dans les déserts, vêtus de peaux d'animaux, exposés à toutes les privations. (2Rois 1.8 ; Zacharie 13.4)

- Le verbe : ils furent tentés, surprend au milieu de cette énumération de supplices. S'il est authentique, il exprime sans doute la tentation spéciale qu'il y a pour l'homme le plus fort dans ces horribles souffrances. Mais comme, suivant les manuscrits, il est tantôt avant, tantôt après : ils furent sciés, et que ce dernier mot ressemble au premier à deux lettres près, on a supposé qu'un lecteur qui ne comprenait pas à quels martyrs s'appliquait cette mention mit, comme conjecture, en marge : ils furent tentés, et que dans la suite ce vocable passa dans le texte. On a proposé aussi d'y changer deux lettres pour en faire un verbe qui désignerait le supplice par le feu.
