Après avoir cité l'exemple d'Enoch, dont toute l'histoire se résume dans ce mot profond : "il marcha avec Dieu," (Genèse 5.22) l'auteur ajoute, (Hébreux 11.6) pour prouver que cette communion intime avec Dieu fut chez ce patriarche le fruit de la foi, la déclaration que, sans la foi, il est impossible de plaire au Seigneur.

En effet, la communion avec Dieu suppose deux choses qui sont l'essence même de la foi : croire que Dieu existe, non seulement admettre son existence, mais avoir trouvé par la foi le Dieu vivant et vrai que la raison obscurcie ne connaît pas ; puis, croire qu'il devient le rémunérateur, et est lui-même la plus grande récompense (Hébreux 10.35) de ceux qui le cherchent, et auxquels il aime à se manifester.

La foi, la confiance du cœur est de tous nos sentiments celui qui honore le plus notre Père céleste ; voilà pourquoi il lui est si agréable. En même temps, c'est le seul qui nous mette véritablement en communion avec lui, et cette communion est le bien suprême de l'homme, l'unique récompense qu'il puisse désirer.

- Quant au fait qu'Enoch fut transporté au ciel, pour ne point voir la mort, l'auteur entend littéralement le récit le la Genèse. Aussi cite-t-il les paroles mêmes de ce récit : (grec) il n'était pas trouvé, parce que Dieu l'avait transporté. (Genèse 5.24)

Toutes nos versions portent : enlevé, enlèvement. Ce terme ne fait penser qu'à un seul lieu, celui d'où la personne enlevée disparaît. Le mot grec signifie déplacer, transporter ; il dirige l'attention, non seulement vers le lieu du départ, mais vers celui de l'arrivée ; et c'est ce qui importait à l'auteur.

On a proposé de traduire la fin de Hébreux 11.6 : car avant le passage où est raconté le transport, il lui est rendu témoignage. (Voir une construction analogue, Marc 12.26)
