Souvenez-vous des prisonniers, comme si vous étiez emprisonnés avec eux ; et de ceux qui sont maltraités, comme étant vous-mêmes du même Corps.

Tous les chrétiens, ayant la même foi, le même esprit, le même amour fraternel, (Hébreux 13.1) sont solidaires les uns des autres, (1Corinthiens 12.26) quand l'un est lié, maltraité, tous le sont en lui.

Les dernières paroles, exprimant la raison de cette solidarité : comme étant aussi vous-mêmes dans un corps, ont été diversement interprétées.

Calvin entend par le corps où sont les chrétiens le corps de Christ, l'Eglise ; de là nos anciennes versions : "comme étant du même corps," sens très beau, mais qui n'est pas dans le texte. Bèze traduit : "comme si, en personne, vous étiez maltraités."

Enfin, la plupart des interprètes, prenant les termes tels qu'ils sont, y trouvent cette pensée : Etant dans un corps, et vivant dans ce monde, vous êtes exposés aux mêmes dangers, aux mêmes souffrances qui tôt ou tard vous atteindront : prenez donc part aux épreuves de vos frères.
