Therefore leaving the teaching of the first principles of Christ, let us press on to perfection--not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, of faith toward God,

of the teaching of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
3
This will we do, if God permits.

For concerning those who were once enlightened and tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit,
5
and tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the age to come,
6
and then fell away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance; seeing they crucify the Son of God for themselves again, and put him to open shame.
7
For the land which has drunk the rain that comes often on it, and brings forth a crop suitable for them for whose sake it is also tilled, receives blessing from God;
8
but if it bears thorns and thistles, it is rejected and near being cursed, whose end is to be burned.
9
But, beloved, we are persuaded of better things for you, and things that accompany salvation, even though we speak like this.
10
For God is not unrighteous, so as to forget your work and the labor of love which you showed toward his name, in that you served the saints, and still do serve them.
11
We desire that each one of you may show the same diligence to the fullness of hope even to the end,
12
that you won't be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherited the promises.

For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he could swear by none greater, he swore by himself,
14
saying, "Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you."
15
Thus, having patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
16
For men indeed swear by a greater one, and in every dispute of theirs the oath is final for confirmation.
17
In this way God, being determined to show more abundantly to the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel, interposed with an oath;
18
that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have a strong encouragement, who have fled for refuge to take hold of the hope set before us.
19
This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and entering into that which is within the veil;
20
where as a forerunner Jesus entered for us, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

C'est pourquoi, laissant les bases de l’enseignement relatif au Messie, tendons vers la maturité sans avoir à reposer le fondement du renoncement aux œuvres mortes, de la foi en Dieu,

de l'enseignement concernant les baptêmes et l'imposition des mains, de la résurrection des morts et du jugement éternel.

C'est ce que nous ferons, si Dieu le permet.

En effet, ceux qui ont été une fois éclairés, qui ont goûté au don céleste, qui ont eu part au Saint-Esprit,
5
qui ont goûté à la bonne parole de Dieu et aux puissances du monde à venir,
6
et qui pourtant sont tombés, il est impossible de les amener une nouvelle fois à changer d’attitude, puisqu'ils crucifient de nouveau pour eux-mêmes le Fils de Dieu et le déshonorent publiquement.

Lorsqu'une terre arrosée de pluies fréquentes produit des plantes utiles à ceux pour qui elle est cultivée, elle reçoit de Dieu sa part de bénédiction.

Mais si elle produit des ronces et des chardons, elle est jugée sans valeur, bien près d’être maudite, et on finit par y mettre le feu.

Même si nous parlons ainsi, bien-aimés, nous sommes convaincus qu’en ce qui vous concerne vous avez la meilleure part, celle qui est favorable au salut.

En effet, Dieu n'est pas injuste pour oublier votre œuvre et [le travail de] votre amour. Vous avez démontré votre amour pour son nom par les services que vous avez rendus et que vous rendez encore aux saints,
11
et nous désirons que chacun de vous fasse preuve du même zèle pour conserver jusqu'à la fin une pleine espérance.
12
Ainsi vous ne vous relâcherez pas, mais vous imiterez ceux qui, par la foi et la patience, reçoivent l’héritage promis.

Lorsque Dieu a fait la promesse à Abraham, comme il ne pouvait pas prêter serment par plus grand que lui, il a juré par lui-même
14
en disant : Certainement, je te comblerai de bénédictions et je multiplierai ta descendance.
15
C'est ainsi qu’après une attente patiente Abraham a obtenu ce qui lui avait été promis.
16
Or, les hommes jurent par plus grand qu'eux et le serment est une garantie qui met fin à toute contestation.
17
C’est pourquoi Dieu, voulant montrer plus clairement encore aux héritiers de la promesse le caractère irrévocable de sa décision, est intervenu par un serment.
18
Ainsi, par deux actes irrévocables dans lesquels il est impossible que Dieu mente, nous sommes puissamment encouragés, nous dont le seul refuge a été de saisir l'espérance qui nous était proposée.
19
Cette espérance, nous la possédons comme une ancre solide et sûre de l'âme ; elle pénètre derrière le voile,
20
là où Jésus, établi grand-prêtre pour toujours à la manière de Melchisédek, est entré pour nous en précurseur.
