Le contexte exige qu'on prenne ce dernier mot au sens propre. Le mal physique a pour sa cause première le péché. Ainsi le considérait Jésus. (Matthieu 9.2, 2e note.)

C'est pourquoi confesser nos fautes (Grec : "faux pas, chutes"), non pas à un prêtre faisant métier de confesseur, et s'arrogeant le droit exclusif d'absoudre, mais les uns aux autres prier les uns pour les autres dans une sainte et fraternelle communion, sera un moyen d'attaquer le mal à sa source, d'en obtenir la guérison. Aussi le verser verset 16 n'est-il, dans la pensée de l'auteur, que la conséquence de versets 14,15, comme l'indique la particule conclusive donc (Sin., B. A), que le texte reçu omet à tort.

Les mots : faite avec ferveur, sont la traduction d'un participe passif, qu'on peut rendre comme suit : "Elle peut beaucoup, la supplication d'un juste qui est opérée," c'est-à-dire opérée au dedans de lui par l'Esprit de Dieu, qui seul nous enseigne à prier, qui seul forme en nous la vraie supplication. (Romains 8.26,27)

Si telle est la pensée de Jacques, nul chrétien n'en méconnaîtra la vérité et la beauté. Et avec une telle idée de la prière, on comprend que Jacques attende de si grandes choses de la supplication offerte à Dieu pour la guérison morale et physique d'un frère souffrant. Celui qui prie par l'Esprit de Dieu peut aller dans ses demandes aussi loin que va sa foi, or, "toutes choses sont possibles à celui qui croit." (Marc 9.23)
