Jean 1.31

Le Précurseur raconte (versets 31-34) comment il est arrivé à la certitude que Jésus est le Messie. Il justifie ainsi le beau témoignage qu'il venait de lui rendre ; (versets 29,30) ce témoignage reposait exclusivement sur l'ordre et la révélation de Dieu. (verset 33, comparez Luc 3.2)

C'est pour obéir à l'ordre de Dieu qu'il s'était mis à baptiser d'eau, expression qui embrasse tout son ministère comme précurseur. En commençant ce ministère, il savait seulement que le Messie allait être manifesté à Israël et que sa propre vocation consistait à lui préparer les voies.

- Cette déclaration : je ne le connaissais pas, que Jean répète au verset 33, signifie qu'il ne savait pas que Jésus fût le Messie ; pour en être assuré il eut besoin du signe qui lui avait été annonce et qui lui fut donné par Dieu. (versets 33,34)

M. Godet entend ces mots dans un sens absolu et pense que Jean-Baptiste, qui avait vécu dans les déserts, n'avait jamais rencontré Jésus et ne le connaissait même pas comme homme.

Cette supposition n'est pas inadmissible, mais peu probable puisque Jean était parent de Jésus et que leurs familles soutenaient des rapports intimes. (Luc 1.36,39 et suivants)

Mais même appliquée à la messianité de Jésus la déclaration du Précurseur paraît en contradiction avec le récit de, (Matthieu 3.14) où Jean refuse de baptiser Jésus et lui dit : "C'est moi qui ai besoin d'être baptisé par toi, et tu viens à moi !"

Comment expliquer ce refus, si Jean ignora que Jésus fut le Messie jusqu'au moment où Jésus, sortant de l'eau, reçut l'Esprit sous une forme visible ?

Meyer pense que Jean eut une sorte de pressentiment prophétique de la messianité de Jésus. M. Godet suppose que Jean eut un entretien intime avec Jésus, avant le baptême, comme il en avait généralement avec ceux qui venaient à lui et qui, à ce moment, confessaient leurs péchés.

Dans cet entretien, Jean-Baptiste fut frappé des dispositions uniques de ce pénitent d'un nouveau genre qui n'avait aucun péché sur la conscience. La vérité qu'il commença d'entrevoir, et qui lui arracha l'humble protestation conserver par Matthieu, lui fut pleinement confirmée par la manifestation divine qui suivit le baptême.

Telle est la manière la plus naturelle de concilier les deux récits. Selon Lücke, il y aurait eu transposition dans le récit de Matthieu : la parole du verset 14 n'aurait été prononcée qu'après le baptême de Jésus.

Cette hypothèse serait confirmée par l'évangile des Hébreux qui rapporte les faits dans cet ordre ; mais c'est là, il faut en convenir, un assez faible témoignage.

      4 John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching the baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins.
