Le mot : contrée ne désigne pas spécialement le pays où Jésus s'était retiré, mais en général les campagnes, par opposition à la capitale.

Ces gens se rendaient à Jérusalem avant la Pâque, afin que ceux qui étaient atteints de quelque souillure légale eussent le temps de se purifier par des sacrifices et diverses cérémonies, pour pouvoir prendre part à la fête.

Par cette observation, Jean prépare ce qu'il va raconter au verset suivant.
