Chapitre 19.

Donc, sa dernière tentative pour libérer Jésus étant restée sans succès, (Jean 18.33,39) Pilate (grec) prit Jésus et le battit de verges.

Chez les Romains, la règle était que cette peine précédât toujours le crucifiement d'un criminel ; elle était le premier acte du supplice ; (Matthieu 20.19) et c'est ainsi que la flagellation de Jésus est présentée par (Matthieu 27.26) et par (Marc 15.15)

Mais, d'après Jean, Pilate, tout en proclamant l'innocence de Jésus, (Jean 19.4 ; 18.38) et parce qu'il n'avait pas la force morale de le déclarer absous, lui infligea ce châtiment ignominieux et cruel, non dans l'espoir que les chefs du peuple s'en contenteraient (il leur avait proposé déjà ce misérable expédient et avait été repoussé avec perte, Luc 23.16,22), mais parce qu'il espérait apitoyer la foule et provoquer dans son sein quelque revirement d'opinion qui lui permît de sauver Jésus.

Jean 19:1-18 Pilate était certainement loin de penser que Christ, par Ses souffrances imméritées, allait être considéré au cours des siècles, comme le meilleur et le plus grands des exemples. En effet, notre Seigneur Jésus est venu ici-bas, étant prêt à être exposé au mépris.

Il est bon pour chacun, de discerner, par la foi, Christ dans Ses souffrances ; de Le voir spirituellement, de L'aimer, et de Le contempler à nouveau. La haine des opposants de Jésus n'a-t telle pas motivé leurs efforts contre Lui ? Notre amour pour le Seigneur, au contraire, ne dynamisera t-il pas nos efforts en Sa faveur et celle de Son royaume ?

Pilate semble avoir pensé que Jésus était une personne hors du commun. Même la conscience de certaines personnes impies les fait trembler, face à l’idée qu’elles aient à combattre contre Dieu.

Notre Seigneur ayant à souffrir pour les péchés des Juifs, comme pour ceux des Païens, la Sagesse divine fit en sorte que les Juifs voulurent en premier Sa mort, et que les Païens mirent ensuite ce projet à exécution. Si Christ n'avait pas été ainsi rejeté des hommes, nous aurions pour toujours été exclus de la Grâce divine.

Maintenant le Fils de l'homme allait être livré aux mains de Ses bourreaux. Il a été crucifié pour que nous puissions échapper à la condamnation du péché. Il a été cloué à la croix, tel un Sacrifice immolé sur l'autel. L'Écriture a été ainsi accomplie ; Christ n'est pas mort sur l'autel en tant que sacrifié innocent, mais en tant que criminel, condamné par la justice publique.

Arrêtons nous un instant pour regarder par la foi le Seigneur Jésus. A-t-on jamais vu une douleur aussi grande que la Sienne ? Regardez Le, Il saigne, Il va mourir ; regardez Le, aimez Le ! Aimez-ce Sauveur, et consacrez-vous à Lui !
