Hébreu / Grec - Texte original © ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς· Οὐκ εἶχες ἐξουσίαν κατ’ ἐμοῦ οὐδεμίαν εἰ μὴ ἦν δεδομένον σοι ἄνωθεν· διὰ τοῦτο ὁ παραδούς μέ σοι μείζονα ἁμαρτίαν ἔχει.

World English Bible Jesus answered, "You would have no power at all against me, unless it were given to you from above. Therefore he who delivered me to you has greater sin."

Jésus humilie d'abord en Pilate cet orgueil du pouvoir dont il se vante, en lui déclarant qu'il n'a point ce pouvoir par lui-même, mais qu'il lui a été donné par un plus puissant que lui, il lui vient d'en haut (voir sur ce mot Jean 3.3,27,31 ; Jacques 1.17), de Dieu, qui peut le lui ôter.

On pourrait s'attendre à ce que Jésus tire de cette déclaration la conséquence que Pilate est d'autant plus coupable envers lui, puisqu'il est responsable de son pouvoir envers Celui qui le lui a confié.

Mais il voit, au contraire, dans la situation providentielle du gouverneur, qui ne fait qu'exercer envers lui l'autorité que Dieu a donnée aux Romains sur son peuple, une circonstance atténuante.

D'où il conclut (c'est pourquoi), par comparaison, que celui qui l'a livré à Pilate (le sanhédrin) est chargé d'un (grec il a un) plus grand péché ; car il n'a reçu de Dieu aucune autorité pour cela, mais il l'a usurpée.

Jésus ne voit donc en Pilate que le dépositaire d'un pouvoir auquel lui-même se soumet humblement, mais, en même temps, l'instrument faible et aveugle de la haine du sanhédrin.

Pilate est coupable mais le sanhédrin l'est beaucoup plus. Jésus, lié, accusé et déjà condamné, "se pose en Juge de ses Juges ; et, comme s'il était assis lui-même sur son tribunal il pèse dans son infaillible balance Pilate et le sanhédrin." Godet.
