Tel est donc le but élevé et saint que s'est proposé le disciple que Jésus aimait, c'est à la lumière de cette déclaration qu'il faut lire son évangile tout entier.

Afin que vous croyiez, dit-il à ses lecteurs, que Jésus est le Christ, le Messie, (Jean 1.42,46) l'Oint de l'Eternel, le Sauveur du monde, promis à son peuple.

Mais Jésus ne peut être tout cela que s'il est le Fils de Dieu, dans le sens exclusif que tout notre évangile donne à ce nom.

Une telle foi n'est point une froide opinion de l'intelligence ; ceux qui la possèdent ont en même temps la vie, la vie de l'âme, la vie éternelle, ainsi que portent Sin., C, D, versions.

Enfin, la source unique de cette vie est en son nom, ce nom, qui est l'expression de tout son être.
