C'est ici la troisième fois que cette phrase se trouve, identique, dans notre évangile, (Jean 12.33 ; 18.32) et elle montre, pour le dire en passant, que notre chapitre en fait partie.
Les deux premières fois, elle s'applique à la mort de Jésus et le contexte montre qu'il s'agit de sa mort sur la croix.
Des interprètes en ont conclu que dans notre passage de même, elle désigne le crucifiement de Pierre.
Ceux au contraire qui ne trouvent pas cette idée dans l'image du verset précédent pensent que l'évangéliste a voulu dire que Pierre glorifierait Dieu par la mort du martyre sans spécifier le genre du supplice.
- C'est par cette mort que Pierre devait glorifier Dieu. Mourir au service de Dieu et pour la vérité divine c'est bien la manière la plus éminente de contribuer à sa gloire dans ce monde. (Comparer Philippiens 1.20 ; 1Pierre 4.16)
Aussi, parmi les chrétiens des premiers siècles, glorifier Dieu était devenu synonyme de souffrir le martyre.
Suis-moi dans cette voie où tu t'es engagé, (versets 15-17) dont je viens de te prédire l'issue, et qui, pour toi comme pour moi, aboutira à la mort. (Comparer Jean 21.22 ; Jean 13.36 ; Matthieu 10.38 ; 9.9)
On a donné de cet ordre si solennel, qui, au fond, concerne tous les chrétiens, des explications qui le rendent parfaitement insignifiant.
Ainsi, Jésus aurait voulu dire : "Suis-moi, là où je vais te conduire pour m'entretenir seul avec toi."
Les interprètes modernes adoptent cette explication, parce que le même verbe suivre est employé au verset 20 pour désigner l'acte de Jean qui vient après Jésus et Pierre (grec qui suit.)
Mais elle n'est admissible que si l'on ajoute, avec M. Godet : "Il ne résulte pourtant pas de là que le sens de l'ordre : suis-moi, soit purement extérieur. Il est clair que par ce premier pas Pierre rentre dans cette voie de l'obéissance envers Jésus qui le conduira au terme tragique de son apostolat. C'est ainsi que le sens supérieur se lie naturellement à l'inférieur, aussi bien que Jean 1.44. Ce symbolisme fait le fond de l'évangile de Jean tout entier."
