Réponse divine qui confond la ruse des accusateurs, enfonce dans leur conscience les traits brûlants de leurs propres péchés, laisse la loi intacte, sanctionne la Justice, donne un libre cours à la miséricorde et, sans atténuer le crime, fait comprendre qu'il peut y avoir au dedans de l'homme des péchés pires, aux yeux de Dieu, que les plus grossières transgressions !

Cette sentence tombant comme un coup de foudre sur les adversaires, leur enlève tout moyen et toute envie d'accuser le Sauveur, soit devant le sanhédrin, soit auprès du peuple. S'ils veulent appliquer la loi dans sa rigueur, c'est leur affaire et même ils devront eux-mêmes y mettre la main, car, d'après cette loi, ce sont les témoins qui doivent, les premiers, jeter la pierre sur le condamné. (Deutéronome 17.7 ; comparez Actes 7.58)

Mais Jésus met à cela une condition qu'aucun ne pourra remplir : Que celui de vous qui est sans péché !...Ce n'est pas que Jésus veuille accuser ainsi tous ces hommes d'être des adultères, mais si l'on considère ce péché à la lumière du principe qu'il a posé lui même, (Matthieu 5.28) qui en est innocent ? et combien de convoitises charnelles sont des violations flagrantes du commandement de Dieu !

Telle est l'interprétation de cette parole, d'après le contexte. Mais quelques interprètes pensent que Jésus entend par ce mot, sans péché, être exempt de toute transgression quelconque. Nous ne pouvons partager cette opinion, car Jésus aurait posé ainsi une condition impossible qui, comme telle, n'aurait pu atteindre la conscience des accusateurs de la femme.

- Cette parole de Jésus a une portée morale qui s'étend bien au delà du cas actuel, elle est propre à faire rentrer en eux-mêmes tous ceux qui, comme les pharisiens du texte, se constituent les accusateurs et les juges de leurs frères, en sondant leur cœur ils y trouveront toujours assez de raisons de garder le silence, de s'humilier et de n'éprouver pour les plus grands pécheurs qu'une tendre compassion. (Matthieu 7.1-5 ; Romains 2.1)
