World English Bible I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus, You have chastised me, and I was chastised, as an untrained calf: turn me, and I shall be turned; for you are Yahweh my God.

J'ai entendu. Jéhova entend par avance le cri d'Ephraïm qui, dans la terre étrangère, fait la confession de ses fautes et reconnaît la justice de son châtiment.

Ramène-moi et je reviendrai, c'est-à-dire : ramène-moi en Canaan pour que j'y puisse revenir ; forme naïve exprimant ce sentiment, que la force de Dieu seul peut accomplir ce retour. Ces mots se rapportent uniquement au retour extérieur. Puis, au verset 49, Ephraïm donne pour motif de sa demande le retour intérieur qui s'est opéré chez lui. Nous avons déjà remarqué, dans Esaïe, que le mot revenir comporte à la fois le sens extérieur de retour de l'exil et le sens moral de conversion. Jérémie passe ici du premier de ces sens au second. Ainsi s'explique le car : Que je revienne en Canaan ; car de cœur je suis déjà revenu à toi. Ephraïm s'est retourné de cœur vers son père ; c'est pourquoi il peut rentrer maintenant dans la maison paternelle.

J'ai frappé sur ma cuisse : geste d'effroi (Ezéchiel 21.17). Ephraïm est comme terrifié, maintenant que dans la lumière de Dieu ses yeux s'ouvrent pour juger sa conduite passée.

Éphraïm (la dixième tribu), pleure sur ses péchés. Elle se sait fautive, reconnaissant son iniquité, sa folie et ses manquements. Elle se rend compte qu'elle est absolument incapable, par ses propres forces, de rester en communion avec Dieu, et qu'elle est victime de Sa rébellion contre ce Dernier.

En conséquence, cette tribu s'adresse à l'Éternel : « Fais-moi revenir, et je reviendrai » ; elle s'est soumise à la volonté divine. Quand l'enseignement de l'Esprit divin se joint à l'action de la Providence, tout devient vraiment très efficace !

Qu'il est réconfortant de savoir que le Seigneur ne nous quitte pas du regard, même au temps de l'affliction ! Dieu dispose d'une Grâce inépuisable, riche, sûre qui agit avec pertinence, en faveur de ceux qui La recherchent en toute sincérité !
