Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he began to reign; and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah.

He did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, according to all that Jehoiakim had done.
3
For through the anger of Yahweh it happened in Jerusalem and Judah, until he had cast them out from his presence. Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.
4
It happened in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem, and encamped against it; and they built forts against it round about.

So the city was besieged to the eleventh year of king Zedekiah.

In the fourth month, in the ninth day of the month, the famine was severe in the city, so that there was no bread for the people of the land.

Then a breach was made in the city, and all the men of war fled, and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king's garden; (now the Chaldeans were against the city all around;) and they went toward the Arabah.
8
But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after the king, and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho; and all his army was scattered from him.
9
Then they took the king, and carried him up to the king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath; and he gave judgment on him.
10
The king of Babylon killed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes: he killed also all the princes of Judah in Riblah.
11
He put out the eyes of Zedekiah; and the king of Babylon bound him in fetters, and carried him to Babylon, and put him in prison until the day of his death.

Now in the fifth month, in the tenth day of the month, which was the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, who stood before the king of Babylon, into Jerusalem:

and he burned the house of Yahweh, and the king's house; and all the houses of Jerusalem, even every great house, burned he with fire.
14
All the army of the Chaldeans, who were with the captain of the guard, broke down all the walls of Jerusalem all around.
15
Then Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive of the poorest of the people, and the residue of the people who were left in the city, and those who fell away, who fell to the king of Babylon, and the residue of the multitude.
16
But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left of the poorest of the land to be vineyard keepers and farmers.
17
The Chaldeans broke the pillars of brass that were in the house of Yahweh, and the bases and the bronze sea that were in the house of Yahweh in pieces, and carried all the of their brass to Babylon.
18
They also took away the pots, the shovels, the snuffers, the basins, the spoons, and all the vessels of brass with which they ministered.
19
The captain of the guard took away the cups, the fire pans, the basins, the pots, the lampstands, the spoons, and the bowls; that which was of gold, in gold, and that which was of silver, in silver.
20
They took the two pillars, the one sea, and the twelve bronze bulls that were under the bases, which king Solomon had made for the house of Yahweh. The brass of all these vessels was without weight.
21
As for the pillars, the height of the one pillar was eighteen cubits; and a line of twelve cubits encircled it; and its thickness was four fingers. It was hollow.
22
A capital of brass was on it; and the height of the one capital was five cubits, with network and pomegranates on the capital all around, all of brass: and the second pillar also had like these, and pomegranates.
23
There were ninety-six pomegranates on the sides; all the pomegranates were one hundred on the network all around.
24
The captain of the guard took Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah the second priest, and the three keepers of the threshold:

and out of the city he took an officer who was set over the men of war; and seven men of those who saw the king's face, who were found in the city; and the scribe of the captain of the army, who mustered the people of the land; and sixty men of the people of the land, who were found in the midst of the city.

Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard took them, and brought them to the king of Babylon to Riblah.
27
The king of Babylon struck them, and put them to death at Riblah in the land of Hamath. So Judah was carried away captive out of his land.
28
This is the people whom Nebuchadnezzar carried away captive: in the seventh year three thousand twenty-three Jews;
29
in the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar he carried away captive from Jerusalem eight hundred thirty-two persons;
30
in the three and twentieth year of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive of the Jews seven hundred forty-five persons: all the persons were four thousand and six hundred.

and he spoke kindly to him, and set his throne above the throne of the kings who were with him in Babylon,

and changed his prison garments. Jehoiachin ate bread before him continually all the days of his life:

וַתִּבָּקַ֣ע הָעִ֗יר וְכָל־אַנְשֵׁ֣י הַמִּלְחָמָ֡ה יִבְרְחוּ֩ וַיֵּצְא֨וּ מֵהָעִ֜יר לַ֗יְלָה דֶּ֜רֶךְ שַׁ֤עַר בֵּין־הַחֹמֹתַ֙יִם֙ אֲשֶׁר֙ עַל־גַּ֣ן הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְכַשְׂדִּ֥ים עַל־הָעִ֖יר סָבִ֑יב וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ דֶּ֥רֶךְ הָעֲרָבָֽה׃

וַיִּרְדְּפ֤וּ חֵיל־כַּשְׂדִּים֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַיַּשִּׂ֥יגוּ אֶת־צִדְקִיָּ֖הוּ בְּעַֽרְבֹ֣ת יְרֵח֑וֹ וְכָל־חֵיל֔וֹ נָפֹ֖צוּ מֵעָלָֽיו׃

וַֽיִּתְפְּשׂוּ֙ אֶת־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַיַּעֲל֨וּ אֹת֜וֹ אֶל־מֶ֧לֶךְ בָּבֶ֛ל רִבְלָ֖תָה בְּאֶ֣רֶץ חֲמָ֑ת וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אִתּ֖וֹ מִשְׁפָּטִֽים׃

הָעַמּוּדִ֣ים ׀ שְׁנַ֗יִם הַיָּ֤ם אֶחָד֙ וְהַבָּקָ֞ר שְׁנֵים־עָשָׂ֤ר נְחֹ֙שֶׁת֙ אֲשֶׁר־תַּ֣חַת הַמְּכֹנ֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָׂ֛ה הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה לְבֵ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה לֹא־הָיָ֣ה מִשְׁקָ֔ל לִנְחֻשְׁתָּ֖ם כָּל־הַכֵּלִ֥ים הָאֵֽלֶּה׃

וְהָעַמּוּדִ֗ים שְׁמֹנֶ֨ה עֶשְׂרֵ֤ה אַמָּה֙ *קומה **קוֹמַת֙ הָעַמֻּ֣ד הָאֶחָ֔ד וְח֛וּט שְׁתֵּים־עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה אַמָּ֖ה יְסֻבֶּ֑נּוּ וְעָבְי֛וֹ אַרְבַּ֥ע אַצְבָּע֖וֹת נָבֽוּב׃

וְכֹתֶ֨רֶת עָלָ֜יו נְחֹ֗שֶׁת וְקוֹמַ֨ת הַכֹּתֶ֥רֶת הָאַחַת֮ חָמֵ֣שׁ אַמּוֹת֒ וּשְׂבָכָ֨ה וְרִמּוֹנִ֧ים עַֽל־הַכּוֹתֶ֛רֶת סָבִ֖יב הַכֹּ֣ל נְחֹ֑שֶׁת וְכָאֵ֛לֶּה לַֽעַמּ֥וּד הַשֵּׁנִ֖י וְרִמּוֹנִֽים׃

וַיִּֽהְיוּ֙ הָֽרִמֹּנִ֔ים תִּשְׁעִ֥ים וְשִׁשָּׁ֖ה ר֑וּחָה כָּל־הָרִמּוֹנִ֥ים מֵאָ֛ה עַל־הַשְּׂבָכָ֖ה סָבִֽיב׃

וַיִּקַּ֣ח רַב־טַבָּחִ֗ים אֶת־שְׂרָיָה֙ כֹּהֵ֣ן הָרֹ֔אשׁ וְאֶת־צְפַנְיָ֖ה כֹּהֵ֣ן הַמִּשְׁנֶ֑ה וְאֶת־שְׁלֹ֖שֶׁת שֹׁמְרֵ֥י הַסַּֽף׃

וַיִּקַּ֣ח אוֹתָ֔ם נְבוּזַרְאֲדָ֖ן רַב־טַבָּחִ֑ים וַיֹּ֧לֶךְ אוֹתָ֛ם אֶל־מֶ֥לֶךְ בָּבֶ֖ל רִבְלָֽתָה׃

וַיַּכֶּ֣ה אוֹתָם֩ מֶ֨לֶךְ בָּבֶ֧ל וַיְמִתֵ֛ם בְּרִבְלָ֖ה בְּאֶ֣רֶץ חֲמָ֑ת וַיִּ֥גֶל יְהוּדָ֖ה מֵעַ֥ל אַדְמָתֽוֹ׃

Sédécias avait vingt et un ans quand il devint roi de Juda ; il régna onze ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s’appelait Hamoutal ; elle était fille d’Irméya, de Libna.

Sédécias fit ce qui déplaît au Seigneur, tout comme Joaquim.

Ce qui se passa alors à Jérusalem et dans le royaume de Juda provoqua la colère du Seigneur, qui finit par rejeter son peuple loin de lui. Sédécias se révolta contre le roi Nabucodonosor de Babylone.

Celui-ci vint alors à Jérusalem avec toute son armée. Ses troupes installèrent leur camp devant la ville et entourèrent Jérusalem de tranchées. C’était la neuvième année du règne de Sédécias, le dixième jour du dixième mois.

Le siège dura jusqu’à la onzième année de son règne.

La famine était devenue terrible dans la ville ; il n’y avait plus de quoi nourrir la population. Le neuvième jour du quatrième mois,

les Babyloniens ouvrirent une brèche dans la muraille de la ville. A la nuit tombée, les combattants de Juda s’enfuirent. Malgré les Babyloniens qui encerclaient la ville, ils quittèrent Jérusalem par la porte située entre les deux murailles près du jardin du Roi. Puis ils prirent le chemin qui mène à la vallée du Jourdain.

Mais les troupes babyloniennes se lancèrent à la poursuite du roi Sédécias et le rattrapèrent dans la plaine de Jéricho ; toute son armée l’avait abandonné.

Les Babyloniens le firent prisonnier et le conduisirent au roi de Babylone, qui se trouvait à Ribla, au pays de Hamath. C’est là que Nabucodonosor rendit son jugement contre Sédécias.

C’est là également qu’il fit exécuter les fils de Sédécias en présence de leur père, ainsi que tous les hauts fonctionnaires de Juda.

Après quoi, le roi de Babylone fit crever les yeux de Sédécias et l’envoya solidement enchaîné à Babylone pour l’y jeter en prison ; Sédécias y resta jusqu’au jour de sa mort.
Nebouzaradan achève la ruine de Jérusalem

La dix-neuvième année du règne de Nabucodonosor, le dixième jour du cinquième mois, Nebouzaradan fit son entrée à Jérusalem ; c’était le chef des gardes, un haut personnage de la cour du roi de Babylone.

Il incendia le temple, le palais royal et les maisons de la ville, en particulier toutes celles des personnes de haut rang.

Les troupes babyloniennes, qui accompagnaient le chef des gardes, démolirent les murailles qui entouraient Jérusalem.

Ensuite Nebouzaradan déporta la population qui était restée dans la ville, dont quelques familles pauvres, et ceux qui s’étaient rendus au roi de Babylone, ainsi que les derniers artisans.

Mais il laissa une partie de la population pauvre pour cultiver les vignes et les champs.

Les Babyloniens mirent en pièces les colonnes de bronze qui se trouvaient à l’entrée du temple, ainsi que les chariots et la grande cuve de bronze placés dans la cour. Ils emportèrent tout ce bronze à Babylone.

Ils prirent aussi tous les objets de bronze qui servaient pour le culte : récipients à cendres, pelles, mouchettes, bols à aspersion et coupes.

Le chef des gardes prit encore tous les objets d’or et d’argent : bassines, cassolettes, bols à aspersion, récipients à cendres, chandeliers, coupes et vases.

Il fut impossible de peser le métal représenté par tous les objets de bronze que le roi Salomon avait fait confectionner pour le temple du Seigneur : les deux colonnes, la grande cuve avec les douze taureaux qui la supportaient, et les chariots.

Par exemple, les colonnes avaient chacune neuf mètres de haut et six mètres de tour ; elles étaient creuses, avec une épaisseur de métal de quatre doigts.

Elles étaient surmontées chacune d’un chapiteau de bronze, haut de deux mètres et demi et décoré tout autour d’une sorte de filet de bronze et de fruits de grenadier également en bronze. Les deux colonnes étaient identiques, ainsi que leurs décorations :

quatre-vingt-seize fruits de grenadier sur les côtés, soit un total de cent fruits tout autour du filet.

Le chef des gardes fit arrêter le grand-prêtre Seraya, son adjoint Sefania et les trois prêtres gardiens de l’entrée du temple.

Il fit arrêter également un fonctionnaire responsable du personnel militaire, puis sept personnes de la cour du roi, enfin le secrétaire du chef de l’armée, chargé du recrutement, et soixante citoyens de Juda ; tous ces gens se trouvaient alors à Jérusalem.

Nebouzaradan les conduisit auprès du roi de Babylone, à Ribla.

Celui-ci les fit exécuter sur place, au pays de Hamath. C’est ainsi que le peuple de Juda fut déporté loin de son territoire.

la vingt-troisième année Nebouzaradan, le chef des gardes, fit encore déporter 745 Judéens. Au total 4 600 personnes.
Le roi de Babylone gracie Joakin

Trente-sept ans après la déportation du roi Joakin de Juda, Évil-Mérodak devint roi de Babylone. Le vingt-cinquième jour du douzième mois de cette année-là, il accorda sa grâce à Joakin et le fit sortir de prison.

Il lui parla avec bonté et lui attribua un rang supérieur à celui des rois qui se trouvaient avec lui à Babylone.

Joakin fut autorisé à ne plus porter la tenue des prisonniers, et désormais il prit toujours ses repas à la table du roi de Babylone.

C’est ainsi que chaque jour jusqu’à sa mort, Joakin reçut du roi de Babylone ce qui était nécessaire à son entretien.
