Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that had come on him, they each came from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, and they made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and to comfort him.

11 à 13 Arrivée des trois amis.

Théman : en Idumée (Genèse 36.11,15). Les habitants de Théman étaient renommés pour leur sagesse (Jérémie 49.7).

Eliphaz est un ancien nom iduméen (Genèse 36.4,10,12).

Suach, tribu arabe descendant de Kétura (Genèse 25.2 ; voir aussi verset 6) et, d'après les inscriptions cunéiformes, établie à un moment donné près de la rive droite de l'Euphrate.

Naama, contrée inconnue, peut-être en Arabie.

Le plaindre, littéralement : Faire aller devant lui leurs têtes de droite et de gauche : geste de profonde condoléance.

Les amis de Job semblent remarquables à la fois par leur rang social, leur sagesse et leur piété. Une grande partie du réconfort que nous trouvons ici-bas provient de notre lien amical avec des personnes prudentes et vertueuses. En venant pleurer avec Job, ses trois amis lui ont manifesté la peine qu'ils ressentaient réellement. Ils vinrent donc pour le soulager et se sont assis auprès de lui. Au vu de ces épreuves, il semblerait qu'ils aient suspecté un jugement céleste relatif à quelque crime commis par le patriarche, malgré sa profession de piété. Beaucoup considèrent que ces trois personnages ont rendu tout simplement visite à leur ami éprouvé ; nous devons prendre exemple de cette démarche : si la religion anime notre cœur, du fruit doit en ressortir dans nos vies. Et si l'exemple des amis de Job n'est pas suffisant pour nous faire éprouver de la pitié pour l'affligé, recherchons plutôt à avoir l'esprit qui animait Christ.
