1 à 3 Introduction.

L'Eternel répondit à Job, que le discours d'Elihu a préparé à tirer profit de cette apparition. On s'est étonné que l'Eternel ne fasse aucune allusion à Elihu. Mais il y a plusieurs manières d'approuver quelqu'un ; l'une d'elles consiste à marcher sur ses traces, même sans le faire remarquer.

Du milieu du tourbillon : de l'orage qui se formait dans le lointain pendant que parlait Elihu (37.2), et qui maintenant éclate. Job n'était point assez mâté ; il a fallu que Dieu lui montrât une force terrible. Pour cette cause donc il a tonné et a ému ce tourbillon, afin que Job connût à quel maître il avait affaire.(Calvin).

Job maintenant, se tait, malgré le fait que ses amis ne soient pas toujours convaincus. Élihu a réduit Job au silence, mais ne l'a pas amené à admettre sa faute devant Dieu.

C'est à ce moment que l'Éternel intervient. Ce Dernier humilie Job et l'invite à se repentir d'avoir tenu des propos quelque peu mêlés de passion au sujet de la Providence divine dirigeant ses pas ; Dieu rappelle au patriarche combien son temps sur terre est compté, face à l'éternité divine. L'Éternel lui rappelle également, face à son ignorance, qu'Il connaît toutes choses. Il lui rappelle qu'Il est le Tout Puissant, face à sa faiblesse. Dans notre folie, le dédain de la sagesse divine est une grande provocation envers Dieu. Par contre, une humble foi et une obéissance sincère sont bien meilleures à Ses yeux !
