Dans ses derniers discours (Matthieu 24.29 ; Marc 13.24-25 ; Luc 21.25-26), le Seigneur annonce qu'au moment où la fin de l'économie actuelle approchera, de grandes commotions dans la nature et particulièrement dans les astres avec lesquels la terre est le plus étroitement liée, préluderont à cette catastrophe. Joël mentionne ici l'affaiblissement de la lumière du soleil et la couleur rougeâtre et menaçante de la lune, messagère ordinaire de calme et de sérénité.

Les deux versets 30 et 31 signalent l'un le point de départ, l'autre le terme de l'époque réservée à l'effusion de l'Esprit sur la terre ; ils rapprochent ces deux événements, dont l'un ouvre, l'autre ferme cette ère qui aboutit à la crise finale. C'est que Joël, aussi bien que saint Pierre à la Pentecôte, ignore totalement la durée de cette période, qui est en réalité une Pentecôte continue.
