"Send men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel. Of every tribe of their fathers, you shall send a man, every one a prince among them."

Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, "Go up this way by the South, and go up into the hill country:

and see the land, what it is; and the people who dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many;

and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds;

and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. Be courageous, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes."

So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, to the entrance of Hamath.

Joshua the son of Nun secretly sent two men out of Shittim as spies, saying, "Go, view the land, including Jericho." They went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and slept there.

Joshua rose up early in the morning; and they moved from Shittim, and came to the Jordan, he and all the children of Israel. They lodged there before they passed over.

The children of Israel encamped in Gilgal. They kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho.

Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the children of Israel. No one went out, and no one came in.

Yahweh said to Joshua, "Behold, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and the mighty men of valor.

All your men of war shall march around the city, going around the city once. You shall do this six days.
4
Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark. On the seventh day, you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.
5
It shall be that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall go up every man straight before him."

Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said to them, "Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of Yahweh."
7
They said to the people, "Advance! March around the city, and let the armed men pass on before Yahweh's ark."

It was so, that when Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before Yahweh advanced, and blew the trumpets; and the ark of the covenant of Yahweh followed them.

The armed men went before the priests who blew the trumpets, and the ark went after them. The trumpets sounded as they went.

Joshua commanded the people, saying, "You shall not shout, nor let your voice be heard, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout."

So he caused the ark of Yahweh to go around the city, going about it once. Then they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.

Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of Yahweh.
13
The seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of Yahweh went on continually, and blew the trumpets: and the armed men went before them. The rear guard came after the ark of Yahweh. The trumpets sounded as they went.

The second day they marched around the city once, and returned into the camp. They did this six days.
15
It happened on the seventh day, that they rose early at the dawning of the day, and marched around the city in the same way seven times. Only on this day they marched around the city seven times.
16
It happened at the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, "Shout, for Yahweh has given you the city!
17
The city shall be devoted, even it and all that is in it, to Yahweh. Only Rahab the prostitute shall live, she and all who are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.
18
But as for you, only keep yourselves from the devoted thing, lest when you have devoted it, you take of the devoted thing; so would you make the camp of Israel accursed, and trouble it.
19
But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are holy to Yahweh. They shall come into Yahweh's treasury."
20
So the people shouted, and the priests blew the trumpets. It happened, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, that the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
21
They utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, both young and old, and ox, and sheep, and donkey, with the edge of the sword.
22
Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, "Go into the prostitute's house, and bring out from there the woman and all that she has, as you swore to her."
23
The young men who were spies went in, and brought out Rahab with her father, her mother, her brothers, and all that she had. They also brought out all her relatives, and they set them outside of the camp of Israel.
24
They burnt the city with fire, and all that was in it. Only they put the silver, the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron into the treasury of Yahweh's house.
25
But Rahab the prostitute, her father's household, and all that she had, Joshua saved alive. She lived in the midst of Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers, whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

The children of Dan sent of their family five men from their whole number, men of valor, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said to them, "Go, explore the land!" They came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and lodged there.

Then the five men who went to spy out the country of Laish answered, and said to their brothers, "Do you know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and an engraved image, and a molten image? Now therefore consider what you have to do."

The five men who went to spy out the land went up, and came in there, and took the engraved image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men girt with weapons of war.

By faith, Rahab the prostitute, didn't perish with those who were disobedient, having received the spies in peace.

In the same way, wasn't Rahab the prostitute also justified by works, in that she received the messengers, and sent them out another way?
La foi de Josué ne l'empêche pas de prendre toutes les mesures que réclame la prudence.
Secrètement : à l'insu du peuple, qui devait ignorer le contenu de leur rapport. En envoyant secrètement de Sittim ces deux espions, au moment où il proclamait l'ordre indiqué 1.11, Josué pensait sans doute qu'ils reviendraient dans l'espace des trois jours dont il est parlé dans ce verset : il comptait un jour pour aller, un jour pour épier et un jour pour revenir, ce qui semblait devoir pleinement suffire. Nous verrons quelle fut la circonstance qui les força de prolonger leur absence et retarda le passage du fleuve.
Le pays : la campagne autour de Jéricho.
Et ils allèrent : faisant environ cinq heures de marche.
Dans la maison d'une courtisane : une maison ouverte à tout venant et de plus située à l'écart (verset 15).
Les cacha, littéralement : le cacha, chacun séparément.
Je n'ai pas su. Persuadée de la victoire finale des Israélites, Rahab use d'un mensonge qui, vu le niveau de moralité de son peuple, devait lui paraître permis. Quelque blâmable que ce moyen fut, en lui-même, il faut pourtant reconnaître que dans ce cas il fut l'effet de la foi que cette femme avait au Dieu qui conduisait Israël et à la vietoire prochaine de ce peuple ; voir versets 9 à 11. Rappelons-nous aussi la sainteté des droits de l'hospitalité dans toute l'antiquité. Rahab put croire que la violation de ce devoir sacré était un plus grand crime qu'un mensonge officieux.
Rahab reçoit et cache deux Israélites. (Josué 2:1-7)
La foi dans les promesses divines ne devrait pas nous laisser baisser les bras, face à notre devoir, mais au contraire, encourager notre assiduité à utiliser intelligemment tous les moyens mis à notre disposition. La Providence divine dirigea les espions vers la maison de Rahab.Rahab et les espions. (Josué 2:8-21)
Le retour des espions. (Josué 2:22-24)
Dieu savait en effet, où se trouvait celle qui était de tout cœur en faveur de Son peuple, malgré une compréhensible prudence de la part de cette femme, face aux deux Israélites. Il semble que Rahab ait tenu auparavant une auberge ; et s'il est certain qu'elle avait été une femme de mauvaise vie, on peut voir qu'elle avait abandonné cette voie du péché. Ce qui pourrait nous faire penser à un changement de conduite accidentel, n'est en fait que le résultat de la Providence divine, dirigeant les cours des choses, en vue d'accomplir les desseins divins. C'est par la foi, que Rahab reçut ces hommes, malgré leur nationalité, opposée à son peuple et à son roi.
Nous pouvons être certains qu'il s'agissait là, d'une bonne action. C'est ce que nous confirme d'ailleurs le texte dans, Jacques 2:25 ; elle le fit par la foi, une foi qui l'a placée au dessus de la crainte humaine. Ceux qui prennent ainsi de vrais risques pour Dieu, sont de véritables croyants ; ils s'intègrent par la foi, à Son peuple, en engageant leur destin entre Ses mains. Les espions étaient conduits par la Providence divine, une Providence toute particulière ; Rahab les reçut, sans chercher à tirer quelque bénéfice que ce soit, ni par esprit de malice, sachant pertinemment qu'ils étaient Hébreux et ayant pour dieu le Dieu d'Israël. Bien que des critiques puissent être formulées à l'encontre du mensonge de cette prostituée, envers son roi, il semble qu'il faille admettre que la Parole ne la condamne pas. Ses connaissances de la Loi divine devaient être cependant assez restreintes : un tel mensonge, même prononcé par quelqu'un qui plaçait son espérance dans la lumière de la révélation céleste, mériterait d'être tout de même blâmé.
