1 à 9 Circoncision.

L'impression de terreur, produite par ce passage sur les Cananéens, rendit possible cet acte de consécration, accompli les jours suivants par Israël.

Jusqu'à ce que nous eussions passé. On pourrait sans doute expliquer cette première personne par le sentiment de solidarité par lequel le rédacteur se sent uni avec la totalité de son peuple (Psaumes 66.6). Mais dans ce cas pourquoi cette forme communicative ne reparaîtrait-elle pas beaucoup plus souvent dans le récit ? Il est plus simple d'y voir la trace d'une rédaction due à l'un des témoins de l'événement. Voir encore verset 6.

Qu'il doit être terrible de voir la colère divine foncer sur soi, sans pouvoir y échapper, de quelque côté que ce soit ! Telle est l'horrible situation dans laquelle se trouvent les méchants ; les mots ne peuvent même pas décrire leur angoisse et leur grande terreur. Si les Amoréens et les Cananéens avaient pu prendre en compte, avant qu'il ne soit trop tard, les avertissements qu'ils avaient reçus, ils auraient pu se réfugier dans l'espérance que peut offrir Dieu, l'Auteur de l'évangile ! Ce Dernier remplit leur cœur de crainte, pour les décourager. Cependant, cette situation donnait un peu de repos aux enfants d'Israël, qui venaient d'être circoncis. Ils devenaient ainsi les « premiers-nés » de Dieu, portant sur eux, le sceau de l'alliance. Quand l'Éternel se glorifie en rendant parfait le salut de Son peuple, Il réduit non seulement Ses ennemis au silence, mais « roule* » contre eux leur opprobre.
