וְשֶׂ֣רֶט לָנֶ֗פֶשׁ לֹ֤א תִתְּנוּ֙ בִּבְשַׂרְכֶ֔ם וּכְתֹ֣בֶת קַֽעֲקַ֔ע לֹ֥א תִתְּנ֖וּ בָּכֶ֑ם אֲנִ֖י יְהוָֽה׃

Pour un mort, littéralement pour une âme, une personne. 21.11. Les Nombres et le Deutéronome présentent l'expression plus complète : une âme morte (Nombres 6.6 ; Deutéronome 14.4).

L'usage en question était répandu chez les anciens, Philistins, Babyloniens, Arméniens, Scythes, Romains ; il l'est encore chez les Persans et les Arabes ; il l'était même chez les Juifs au temps de Jérémie, malgré la loi (Jérémie 16.6 ; 41.5). Le deuil chez le peuple de Dieu ne doit avoir rien de désordonné.

Point de figures, littéralement : d'écriture par piqûre. Ce n'est plus ici un signe de deuil ; il s'agit de la coutume du tatouage qui existe encore en Egypte, en Arabie et chez plusieurs peuples sauvages. Un membre du peuple de Dieu doit respecter son corps et ne pas le défigurer de la sorte.
