Lévitique 19.3

Sa mère et son père. La mère est placée la première, selon plusieurs, parce que dans les pays où règne la polygamie, le père étant en quelque sorte le chef de plusieurs familles, la mère est en rapport plus particulier avec ses propres enfants. Mais la polygamie, quoique autorisée, n'était pas régnante en Israël. Il est plus simple d'expliquer la priorité accordée à la mère, soit par l'intention de la relever dans un temps où la subordination de la femme était plus fortement accentuée que de nos jours, soit par la raison que le père inspire naturellement plus de crainte que la mère.

La réunion du quatrième et du cinquième commandement dans le même précepte provient de leur rapprochement dans le Décalogue.
