Nous conservons la leçon du texte reçu qui est confirmée par les anciennes versions (Itala, Syr.). Sir., B, C portent : et il disait : Jésus souviens-toi de moi...

Tout est renfermé dans cette inimitable supplication : l'humilité qui ne demande qu'un souvenir, la confiance qui se jette dans les bras du Sauveur, la foi qui voit dans ce crucifié un roi auquel appartient le royaume spirituel qu'il viendra un jour établir dans sa puissance et sa gloire.

On se demande d'où pouvaient venir à cet homme, qui mourait comme malfaiteur, des sentiments si élevés de repentance et de piété.

La critique négative n'a pas manqué de révoquer en doute la vérité historique de ce récit. Mais, sans compter que cet homme pouvait avoir connu Jésus et entendu ses miséricordieuses invitations adressées aux plus grands pécheurs, la situation présente suffit pour expliquer cette transformation de son âme par l'action de la grâce de Dieu.

Pourquoi, d'abord, sa conscience n'aurait-elle pas été réveillée sous le coup de la condamnation qui le vouait à une mort horrible ?

Puis, n'a-t-il pas marché à côté de Jésus, du palais de Pilate jusqu'au Calvaire ?

N'a-t-il pas vu sa douceur inaltérable, la majesté et la sainteté de tout son être, prêté l'oreille aux paroles solennelles et prophétiques adressées aux femmes de Jérusalem et à tout le peuple ?

Enfin et surtout, n'a-t-il pas entendu, à l'instant même, l'émouvante prière du Sauveur pour ses ennemis, sur lesquels il implorait le "pardon du Père ?"

N'était-ce pas là toute une révélation, l'Evangile entier offert à cette âme profondément humiliée ? Ne devait-elle pas être persuadée que celui qu'on crucifiait alors, comme roi et comme Fils de Dieu, l'était en effet ?
