Selon Marc et Luc, c'est Jésus qui fait la question et la réponse. Dans Matthieu, ce sont les adversaires eux-mêmes qui, interrogés par le Seigneur, sont forcés de prononcer une sentence de condamnation sur les vignerons, ignorant dans leur aveuglement que cette sentence retombait directement sur leurs propres têtes.

Quelques interprètes, afin de mettre Marc et Luc en harmonie avec Matthieu, attribuent ici la réponse aux sacrificateurs et aux scribes, mais cela n'est nullement marqué dans le texte. Dans l'un et l'autre cas, la sentence reste la même et, sortant de la bouche du Seigneur, elle n'en est que plus redoutable.
