Cette fois Jésus prend l'initiative, tandis que, à la première multiplication, ce sont les disciples qui lui font remarquer les besoins de la foule. (Marc 6.35) Les deux premiers évangélistes s'accordent à nous faire remarquer la compassion du Sauveur.

Cette tendre compassion envers une multitude qui persévère depuis trois jours à entendre sa parole, est la vraie raison du miracle ici raconté. L'amour de Jésus est la source de toutes ses œuvres de puissance divine.
