Matthieu 12.43

—Lorsqu’un esprit mauvais est sorti de quelqu’un, il erre çà et là dans des lieux déserts, à la recherche d’un lieu de repos et il n’en trouve pas.

Ces versets (43-45) renferment une parabole qui ramène la fin du discours à son commencement, méthode souvent suivie par Jésus. Il a guéri un malheureux dominé par la puissance des ténèbres. (verset 22) Accusé par ses adversaires, il les a patiemment réfutés et les a rendus attentifs au terrible danger de blasphémer l'Esprit de Dieu.

Interrogé par ceux qui lui demandaient un signe, (verset 38) il signale dans sa réponse l'incrédulité, non de ses interlocuteurs seulement, mais de cette génération tout entière, c'est-à-dire du peuple juif, (versets 41,42) et c'est encore l'état moral de cette génération (verset 45) qu'il décrit par cette remarquable parabole. Le sujet lui en est fourni par le possédé qu'il a guéri et par le discours qu'il a prononcé, peut-être aussi par les fausses guérisons qu'opéraient les exorcistes du temps. (verset 27)

Mais sous l'image de ces esprits impurs, qui ne sont ici que les personnages d'un drame terrible, c'est l'état moral de son peuple que Jésus représente. Dans Luc 11.24 et suivants, la parabole est appliquée plus spécialement aux adversaires de Jésus.

- Les lieux arides sont le désert où, selon les images de I'Ancien Testament, habitent les bêtes féroces et les esprits méchants. (Esaïe 13.21,22 ; 34.14 ; Lévitique 16.11,21,22 ; Apocalypse 18.2)

- Chercher du repos, et n'en point trouver ! tel est l'affreux état de tout esprit déchu de Dieu, pour qui il a été créé. (Esaïe 57.20,21)
