Grec :, le réduira en poussière, le dispersera comme de la poussière, ou plus littéralement encore, le criblera, vannera. Israël sera châtié non seulement en ce que le royaume lui sera enlevé, mais en ce que lui-même sera détruit. Ce verset exprime le côté positif et terrible du châtiment, dont le verset 43 indique le côté négatif.

L'image employée est présentée sous deux faces différentes.

D'abord la pierre est considérée comme gisant sur le sol, et l'incrédulité aveugle vient s'y briser. (Esaïe 8.14,15) C'est le Sauveur dans son état d'humiliation.

Ensuite, cette même pierre est considérée comme tombant sur les rebelles et les réduisant en poussière, c'est le Sauveur dans sa gloire exerçant le jugement. (Daniel 2.34)

- Mais ces paroles, qui se retrouvent littéralement dans Luc à la suite de la même parabole, ne paraissent pas à leur place dans Matthieu. La parabole semble en effet terminée avec verset 43.

Aussi Griesbach, Lachmann, Tregelles, Westcot et Hort révoquent-ils en doute le verset 44, tandis que Tischendorf le supprime tout à fait. Il est vrai que ces critiques se fondent sur D seulement et sur les indications de quelques Pères, en particulier d'Origène. D'autres trouvent ces autorités insuffisantes. B. Weiss déclare le verset 44 certainement authentique ; s'il avait été pris dans Luc, on l'aurait introduit après le verset 42.
