This is how you shall eat it: with your belt on your waist, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste: it is Yahweh's Passover.

For I will go through the land of Egypt in that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and animal. Against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am Yahweh.

The blood shall be to you for a token on the houses where you are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and there shall no plague be on you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.

This day shall be to you for a memorial, and you shall keep it a feast to Yahweh: throughout your generations you shall keep it a feast by an ordinance forever.

La fête commençait le 14 du mois de nisan, après le coucher du soleil, et durait jusqu'au 21. Les Juifs la célébraient exactement selon les prescriptions que Moïse avait données en l'instituant, et qui se lisent dans Exode 12.1 et suivants ; Lévitique 23.5 et suivants
- L'expression dans deux jours, qu'emploie ici le Sauveur, et qui se trouve aussi dans Marc, semble indiquer qu'on était au mardi 12 du mois de nisan, puisque la fête commençait le 14 au soir, moment où l'on immolait l'agneau pascal. Quant à la différence qui parait exister entre les synoptiques et Jean, voir Jean 13.1, note ; Marc 15.21, note.
Quelle parfaite connaissance Jésus avait de tout ce qui allait se passer, et même du moment précis ! Les verbes au présent expriment la certitude de ces tragiques événements et montrent que pour Jésus ils étaient déjà actuels.
Quant aux disciples, ils pouvaient en effet avoir connaissance des souffrances et de la mort de leur Maître d'après Matthieu 20.18-19 ; mais ils ne pouvaient pas savoir qu'elles auraient lieu à la fête de Pâque, et Jésus le leur apprend par ces paroles. Les mots : vous savez se rapportent donc à la proximité de la Pâque, non au crucifiement de Jésus pendant la fête.
