Comme ils ont fait, il leur est fait (comparez verset 3) : ils ont chassé, on les chasse. L'annonce du châtiment est donnée sous la forme d'un ordre de partir.

Partez : pour la captivité (1.16).

Ce pays n'est pas le lieu du repos. Il était pourtant destiné, à l'être. Comparez Deutéronome 12.9-10 ; Esaïe 28.12.

La fin du verset a été expliquée de bien des manières. Notre traduction, très littérale et qui se rapproche le plus de celle d'Ostervald, donne un sens simple et bon. Le sujet du verbe détruira est, selon nous, le pays : par une image facile à comprendre, le prophète représente la terre de Canaan, profanée par ses habitants, comme les rejetant et les détruisant elle-même. Elle se venge ainsi de la souillure qui lui a été infligée. Comparez Lévitique 18.25 ; Esaïe 24.5-6.
