Et maintenant. Ce mot signale, comme le maintenant du verset 9, une scène toute nouvelle qui se présente à l'œil intérieur du prophète : Sion, sauvée de la puissance de Babel, voit se rassembler autour d'elle les nations païennes (de nombreuses nations, même expression qu'aux versets 2 et 3 pour désigner le monde païen en général). Elles viennent, non pour recevoir l'enseignement de Jéhova (verset 2), mais pour combattre Sion, afin de la profaner (comparez Abdias 1.16) et de jouir de sa ruine (comparez Abdias 1.12). Le terme profaner suppose que Sion est maintenant sainte (c'est la Sion des derniers temps, purifiée par le jugement), et il indique que l'attaque que les peuples dirigent contre elle a un motif religieux : leur haine contre Jéhova ; il s'agit ici d'une grande et universelle révolte des puissances païennes contre l'Eternel, dont le règne a son siège en Sion (versets 2 et 7). Mais cette attaque aboutira à leur propre perte. Car, en se rassemblant, elles accomplissent sans le savoir le dessein de Jéhova, qui est de les réunir devant Jérusalem, pour les y frapper toutes ensemble comme on foule les herbes sur l'aire (comparez pour l'image Esaïe 21.10). L'instrument de ce jugement des païens sera Sion elle-même. que le prophète compare, verset 13, au bœuf employé à fouler de son pied le grain (selon la coutume encore aujourd'hui usitée en Orient).
