L'activité du Messie pour le bien de son peuple, dans laquelle il déploie à la fois une puissance et une douceur divines. Elle est dépeinte sous l'image d'un berger paissant son troupeau (type fréquent de la royauté ; comparez 2Samuel 5.2, et Jean 10.10 et suivants).

Il se tiendra... elles se reposeront... Le tableau est celui-ci : le berger debout, appuyé sur son bâton et veillant sur le troupeau ; celui-ci reposant à ses pieds, en pleine sécurité et à l'abri de toute attaque (comparez 4.4).

Paîtra les brebis, hébreu : paîtra, tout court ; mais le français exige pour la clarté un complément qui se tire de lui-même de l'idée du verbe.

Dans la force.... dans la majesté du nom de l'Eternel. Il est revêtu de la force divine pour défendre son troupeau contre loups et voleurs (comparez l'esprit de force, Esaïe 11.2) ; plus que cela : il est tellement uni à Dieu que la plénitude de la puissance et de la majesté divines resplendit en lui ; le nom même de Dieu lui appartient (Dieu fort, Esaïe 9.5 ; comparez Exode 23.21 : Mon nom est en lui). Tout cela dépasse ce qu'on pourrait dire d'un roi terrestre.

Car il sera grand jusqu'aux bouts de la terre. Motif de la sécurité du peuple de Dieu : son propre roi est en même temps le roi de toute la terre. Comparez Psaumes 2.8.
