Quant à toi, Assyrien, ta ruine sera complète, ta race s'éteindra, tes idoles en qui tu te confies seront renversées, parce, dans la balance de la justice divine, tu as été trouvé léger (Daniel 5.27 ; Job 31.6).

A la menace succède immédiatement l'exécution. Nahum décrit, dans un tableau prophétique, la marche de l'armée ennemie contre Ninive (1.15 à 2.4) ; la prise de la ville, le pillage de ses richesses immenses, et sa désolation, quand ses habitants seront emmenés en captivité (2.5-10). Au moment où il va dépeindre cette scène de destruction, le prophète entonne un chant de triomphe (1.15), qu'il reprend 2.11-12, et il termine en rappelant la sentence de l'Eternel qui vient de se réaliser (2.13).
