1 à 43 Deux parties :

  • versets 1 à 26 : Diverses listes de sacrificateurs et de Lévites ;
  • versets 27 à 43 : Dédicace de la muraille de Jérusalem.
Ce récit est bien probablement de la main de Néhémie.

1 à 26 Quatre listes :

  • versets 1 à 9, sacrificateurs et Lévites du temps de Zorobabel
  • versets 10 et 11, souverains sacrificateurs de Zorobabel jusqu'à Alexandre-le-Grand
  • versets 12 à 21, chefs de familles sacerdotales sous Jojakim, fils de Josué
  • versets 24 à 26, principales familles lévitiques de cette même époque.
Les versets 22 et 23 ne rentrent pas dans cette division de la matière et méritent une mention spéciale.

1 à 9 Il est entendu que nous n'avons pas affaire ici à des individus, mais à des familles.

Titre général : sacrificateurs, versets 1 à 7, et Lévites, versets 8 et 9. Sur le rapport de ces vingt-deux noms avec les autres listes analogues, voir la note en début du chapitre 10. Si nous comparons en particulier cette liste avec celle des signataires de l'alliance (10.2-8), nous remarquons que les quinze premiers y figurent presque dans le même ordre, mais que les six derniers ne s'y trouvent point. Peut-être les noms de quelques familles ont-ils varié entre le temps de Zorobabel (Néhémie 12.1 et suivants) et la signature de l'alliance (Néhémie chapitre 10).

Esdras : non pas le sacrificateur et scribe bien connu, qui était de la maison de Séraïa (Esdras 7.1-5), mais un autre prêtre, probablement celui que Néhémie 10.3 appelle Azaria..

      3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and was standing before the angel.
      4 He answered and spoke to those who stood before him, saying, "Take the filthy garments off of him." To him he said, "Behold, I have caused your iniquity to pass from you, and I will clothe you with rich clothing."

      7 "Thus says Yahweh of Armies: 'If you will walk in my ways, and if you will follow my instructions, then you also shall judge my house, and shall also keep my courts, and I will give you a place of access among these who stand by.
      8 Hear now, Joshua the high priest, you and your fellows who sit before you; for they are men who are a sign: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant, the Branch.
      9 For, behold, the stone that I have set before Joshua; on one stone are seven eyes: behold, I will engrave its engraving,' says Yahweh of Armies, 'and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.

      Zacharie 4

      6 Then he answered and spoke to me, saying, "This is the word of Yahweh to Zerubbabel, saying, 'Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says Yahweh of Armies.
      7 Who are you, great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you are a plain; and he will bring out the capstone with shouts of 'Grace, grace, to it!'"
      8 Moreover the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,
      9 "The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house. His hands shall also finish it; and you will know that Yahweh of Armies has sent me to you.
      10 Indeed, who despises the day of small things? For these seven shall rejoice, and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. These are the eyes of Yahweh, which run back and forth through the whole earth."

      Zacharie 6

      11 Yes, take silver and gold, and make crowns, and set them on the head of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest;
