L'ordonnance et la loi, littéralement : l'ordonnance de la loi. Cette expression est obscure et ne se rencontre plus que 31.23. Elle trouve jusqu'à un certain point son explication dans ces mots du verset 14 : Voici la loi, d'où il paraît résulter que ce qui précède ce verset renferme l'ordonnance (chok : statut), et ce qui suit la loi (thora : loi). Il nous paraît probable que le statut est destiné à régler la manière en laquelle le sacrificateur doit préparer l'eau lustrale et qui sera décrite versets 1 à 10 ; et que le terme de loi désigne d'une manière plus générale l'ordre divin d'après lequel la souillure causée par la mort doit être enlevée du milieu du peuple (versets 14 et suivants).

Qu'ils t'amènent : de la part de la communauté tout entière. Le moyen de purification doit être fourni par tous parce qu'il est à l'usage de tous.

Une vache. Une vache, plutôt que le taureau, employé dans les sacrifices pour le péché offerts au nom du peuple entier (Lévitique 4.14). La vache représente sans doute ici la fécondité ; c'est la richesse de vie opposée à la mort.

Rousse : la couleur du sang, car la victime doit représenter la vie dans sa force et sa fraîcheur.

Sans tache. Les rabbins entendaient ce terme dans ce sens que la vache ne devait pas avoir un seul poil d'autre couleur.

Qui n'ait point porté le joug : soit pour que la forme fût encore complètement intacte et possédât toute sa beauté ; soit plutôt afin qu'elle n'eût point encore été associée au travail de l'homme, l'auteur de la mort.
