L'itinéraire naturel des Israélites les aurait conduits à l'ouest jusqu'au Jourdain, en face de Jéricho. L'expédition contre les Amorrhéens du nord les détourne pour un moment du but principal de leur voyage.

Basan. C'est proprement le pays montagneux situé entre le lac de Génésareth à l'ouest, le Hauran à l'est et l'Antiliban an nord. Du récit détaillé de Deutéronome 2.31-3.17 nous devons conclure que ce royaume comprenait aussi à ce moment-là tout le pays de Galaad allant au sud jusqu'au Jabbok.

Edréi, aujourd'hui Dérât, à l'est du lac de Génésareth, était l'une des deux résidences du roi Og (Deutéronome 1.4).
