Pour te faire obstacle, littéralement : comme opposant.

J'ai vu que ce chemin te mène à la ruine. Les mots du texte sont obscurs. On peut traduire aussi : Ce voyage m'est odieux, ou : Sur ce chemin tu te heurtes à moi. Quoi qu'il en soit, on comprend que l'intention de Dieu est d'exclure chez Balaam toute velléité de désobéissance, en lui faisant comprendre, par cette épée nue qui le menace, ce qui l'attend dans ce cas. De plus, à la crainte du châtiment s'ajoute pour Balaam l'humiliation qu'il doit ressentir de recevoir instruction, lui le prophète qui participe à la science de Dieu (24.4), par le moyen d'une ânesse, et d'avoir été préservé par elle de la mort. Quelle leçon de défiance de lui-même ! Après cela il ne pourra ni oublier ni fouler aux pieds l'avertissement du verset 35 (répétition de celui du verset 20) : Et tu ne diras que ce que je te dirai. Ces mots révèlent le but de toute la scène.
