Il n'aperçoit pas de mal en Jacob, il ne voit pas d'injustice en Israël. L'Eternel, son Dieu, est avec lui ; chez lui retentit l’acclamation réservée au roi.

World English Bible He has not seen iniquity in Jacob. Neither has he seen perverseness in Israel. Yahweh his God is with him. The shout of a king is among them.

Un dernier motif de bénédiction ajouté aux trois énoncés dans le premier discours : l'excellence morale de ce peuple. L'esprit de sainteté règne chez lui et le préserve de l'injustice et des misères qui en résulteraient.

Au lieu de on, on traduit souvent il (Jéhova). Ce serait l'idée de la justification divine par laquelle Dieu couvre à ses propres yeux le mal qui peut se trouver chez le peuple choisi par lui.

Pour le sens des mots aven et amal (qui peuvent aussi se traduire vanité et fatigue), comparez Habakuk 1.3.

La seconde partie du verset motive la première. Peut-être l'expression : Son Dieu est avec lui, est-elle inspirée à Balaam par la vue du Tabernacle, le palais du roi d'Israël, qu'il aperçoit dans le lointain.

Le cri dont on acclame un roi : littéralement : un cri de roi.
