C'est ta destruction, Israël, que tu aies été contre moi, contre ton secours.

Israël s'est autodétruit, par sa rébellion ; Il ne pouvait se sauver lui-même et l'aide qu'il pouvait recevoir ne pouvait provenir que du Seigneur. Cela s'applique aussi au cas de sa rédemption spirituelle, où tous sont tombés dans un état de perdition, après avoir commis délibérément le péché.

Dieu manifeste souvent son déplaisir lorsque nous nous obstinons à pécher. Le fait que Dieu donne ou retire toutes choses, dans Son amour, est un sujet de joie pour tous les saints. Par contre, c'est une véritable souffrance pour le méchant, de voir ce même Dieu, dans Sa colère, accorder ou ôter ; le pécheur n'en tire vraiment aucun réconfort.

À moins que les pécheurs ne se repentent et croient à l'évangile, l'angoisse risque de les saisir rapidement. La prophétie de la ruine d'Israël, en tant que nation, montre aussi qu'il y a toujours une miséricorde et une puissance divine disponibles, prêtes à sauver ceux qui le désirent. Cela est aussi une image de la rançon offerte pour le salut d'Israël, par la mort, la mise au tombeau et la résurrection de Christ. Celui-ci a, en effet, détruit la mort et la tombe. Le Seigneur ne se repent jamais de Ses intentions et de Ses promesses. Israël, à cette époque, aurait dû être attristé par ses péchés. À part les œuvres fructueuses qui naissent de l'action du Saint Esprit, toute autre action, aussi positive qu'elle puisse être, sera aussi vaine que les richesses incertaines du monde. La colère de Dieu va dessécher toutes branches, tous rameaux, pour les réduire à néant. Un malheur, plus terrible que n'importe quelle guerre cruelle, tombera sur ceux qui se sont rebellés contre Dieu. Que le Seigneur nous protège d'une telle misère et aussi du péché.
